How We Got Started
The Kansas City Chess Store got started in the fall of 2001 when owners, Kenneth and Yvonne Fee, opened up the Kansas City Chess Club in a Riverside, Missouri shopping mall. Previously, Kenneth was a teacher at Oak Park High School in the North Kansas City School district and was running a Friday evening chess club open for his high school chess team, other students and community members interested in playing chess.
Kenneth continued teaching, coaching several school teams, and running adult and scholastic tournaments and keeping up an internet Ebay-based business selling chess equipment, books and media until 2007 when he retired from teaching. In retirement, Ken has moved into providing before, during and after school clubs for many schools and youth programs in the Kansas City area in addition to offering private lessons to area students.
Currently, the Kansas City Chess Club resides in Liberty, Missouri. It serves over 70 programs in local schools and continues to provide the area with scholastic and adult tournaments in addition to servicing the Kansas City area with a locale for buying chess gear, books, software and other novelties.
